Public Housing for Every Gambian

Every Gambian deserves
a home they are proud of

The NBP will make that a reality

OUR MISSION

The National Builders Party plans to provide safe, affordable and modern public housing for all Gambians who qualify for government housing assistance. Inspired by the success of Singapore’s public housing model, this initiative will focus on building modern homes in villages and small towns, an undertaking that will serve as a core element of the National Modernization Project.

OUR PLAN

Housing is not just about sheltering the population,  it thus represents the prime foundation for dignity, public security, productivity and dignified social wellbeing. The National Builders Party believes that every Gambian family deserves the opportunity to live in a decent home that promotes healthy living and strengthens community ties. By investing in public housing, we aim to reduce poverty, curb rural-urban migration, and stimulate local economies across The Gambia.

Key Objectives of the NBP housing Masterplan:
  1. Build modern homes in underdeveloped regions using durable, cost-effective materials.
  2. Establish public housing estates in each administrative region, beginning with the most underserved areas.
  3. Offer housing to eligible low-income families, prioritizing widows, single mothers, the elderly, the disabled and first-time applicants.
  4. Encourage mixed-income communities to prevent social and economic segregation.
  5. Include essential infrastructure such as clean water, standard paved roads, power supply, waste management, schools, clinics, and community centers within each housing estate.
  6. Generate employment by hiring local contractors, artisans, and laborers to assist in the construction and maintenance of these housing units.
Community Impact and Social Benefits
  • Reduce homelessness and improve living conditions for families in extreme poverty.
  • Slow rural-urban migration by providing modern living in small towns and villages.
  • Support gender equity and family welfare by prioritizing vulnerable populations.
  • Stimulate local economies through construction jobs, maintenance services, and new small businesses.
  • Foster national pride and unity by creating dignified, permanent homes across the country.
Public Engagement and Transparency
  • Citizens will be able to track project progress through regular government updates.
  • All allocations will be transparent and merit-based to prevent corruption and favoritism.
  • Feedback from residents will guide further improvements in design, access, and affordability.

To achieve this fundamental goal, the NBP will engage private developers and international housing advisors to bring in best practices. We will also establish partnerships with vocational training institutes to prepare local builders and technicians. To fulfil the funding aspect of the masterplan, the NBP will seek funding from the Gambian communities both at home and overseas through fund raising campaigns,  international housing development agencies, non-profits and development banks.

Phased Implementation Plan

  • Develop a national public housing policy framework and eligibility criteria.
  • Establish the National Public Housing Authority (NPHA) to oversee the planning, construction, and management of government housing.

Phase 2: Pilot Projects and Site Selection

  • Identify pilot towns and villages across all regions to launch initial housing schemes.
  • Select government-owned or reclaimed land suitable for housing development.
  • Work with planners and architects to design standardized, efficient housing units based on climatic and cultural considerations.

Phase 3: Construction and Infrastructure Development

  • Use modular construction techniques to build rapidly and affordably.
  • Install supporting infrastructure such as roads, water supply systems, electricity, drainage, and waste management.
  • Involve local construction firms and train youth in carpentry, masonry, and plumbing to build capacity.

Phase 4: Allocation and Community Development

  • Allocate homes to qualified applicants based on income, family size and need.
  • Implement a long-term leasehold system to ensure security of tenure.
  • Set up local residents’ committees to help maintain cleanliness, resolve disputes, and promote neighborhood harmony.
