Sea Ports Expansion

Building World-Class Regional Commercial Hubs

OUR MISSION

For The Gambia to rise as a competitive economic force in West Africa, the country must develop modern port infrastructure capable of handling large-scale international trade as well as efficient cargo movement and expanded maritime services. The National Builders Party envisions transforming The Gambia into a world-class regional commercial hub, positioning the nation as a gateway for commerce, logistics, and investment across the subregion.

OUR PLAN

To achieve this, the NBP will conduct a comprehensive feasibility and visibility study to identify two strategic coastal locations suitable for the development of a mega seaport facility.

The first area under assessment will be the Barra coastline, chosen for its geographic access to northern trade corridors and its potential to relieve pressure from current port operations.

The second area is in Banjul, near the Mile 2 Prison vicinity, which offers proximity to existing maritime routes, established infrastructure, and deep-water access ideal for large vessel docking.

The selected site will form the foundation for a world-class commercial seaport, designed with the capacity to handle large container ships, modern cargo terminals, and high-volume logistics operations.

The port complex will include:

  • advanced loading and unloading systems
  • state-of-the-art cranes
  • expanded docking berths
  • customs and inspection zones
  • commercial warehousing
  • secure storage yards

These upgrades will significantly reduce wait times, streamline cargo processing, and increase national revenue through improved port efficiency.

The project will also incorporate dedicated industrial and economic zones nearby, attracting manufacturers, distributors, and shipping companies seeking access to a stable and efficient regional hub. This development will spur job creation, stimulate private sector growth, and enhance The Gambia’s competitiveness in global markets.

Under the NBP plan, the new seaport will connect seamlessly with upgraded roads, bridges, and inland transportation systems, to ensure smooth movement of goods across the country. This integrated approach will strengthen trade routes, lower shipping costs, and enhance Gambia’s role as a logistical crossroads for West Africa.

IMPORTANCE

By expanding and modernizing the nation’s seaports, The Gambia will secure new economic opportunities, attract international investment, and position itself as a strategic commercial powerhouse in the region. This initiative reflects the NBP’s commitment to building infrastructure that supports both today’s needs and anticipates the demands of tomorrow under the National Standard of excellence.
