Education
Educating a Generation of Leaders
We will reform education so every Gambian child and adult have the tools to succeed
OUR MISSION
The National Builders Party (NBP) envisions an education system that provides basic literacy and cultivates the employment of brain power through critical thinking, patriotism to the country, innovation and leadership for national development.
The current state of education in The Gambia still lacks the depth, infrastructure, curriculum modernization and enforcement mechanisms necessary to prepare our young men and women for a competitive, globalized world. The NBP’s education reform agenda aims to usher in a new era where every child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality, modern and relevant education.
OUR PLAN
The NBP will Transition the Gambian Education System from WAEC to International Benchmarking:
In an effort to bring the country up to par with the international standards, the NBP will align the Gambia’s education system with the best in the world. We will initiate plans to exit the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and instead adopt a curriculum and examination framework modeled after systems in the UK, Germany, Finland, Denmark or the USA.
This transformation, if properly implemented, will immensely improve the following:
- Encourage a modern skills-based curriculum.
- Emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and practical applications.
- Prepare students for higher education and competitive job markets both within Africa and globally.
- The new education system will also enhance international recognition of Gambian qualifications.
Curriculum Modernization and National Identity Building
The NBP will undertake a comprehensive evaluation and overhaul of the national curriculum to align it with global standards and national development goals. The key pillars of the new education format will include:
- Introducing subjects rooted in modern civilization, technology, innovation, architecture, digital literacy, critical thinking, environmental science and entrepreneurship.
- The format will also embed civic education, patriotism to the country and civil behavioral approach on matters of public importance. Lessons will passionately emphasize the importance of care and love for the Gambia, responsible citizenship and cultural pride.
The new education system will replace the outdated and rote-based teaching models designed to just produce employees, to the new approaches that stimulate curiosity and critical thought.
The Future Builders Initiative
The NBP will launch the Future Builders Initiative, a national child protection and education initiative designed to make basic education compulsory and enforceable. Under this initiative:
- It will be legally prohibited for parents or guardians to keep their children from attending school without just cause.
- A national student tracking system will be established to monitor school enrollment, attendance and progression for every child in the country.
- The system will identify at-risk children, those who are not in school or are vulnerable to dropout and trigger government interventions including providing school uniforms and supplies to poor families.
- The government will provide free or reduced school breakfast and lunch to all students attending public school from primary school through 12th grade. This will assist families in need and reduce the cost and stress of meal funding, which in turn keeps the focus on education for the youth instead of the financial burden it may have.
- The NBP government will also partner with social welfare programs to ensure no child is kept from education due to poverty.
- Unlike the current situation where school transportation is only provided for some areas in the Kombo’s, we will create safe transport services for children in remote areas.
Infrastructure Overhaul: State-of-the-Art Campuses
No meaningful reform can take place without a modern functional learning environment. The NBP will launch a nationwide school infrastructure modernization campaign that includes:
- Building state-of-the-art school campuses in every region with proper ventilation, electricity, internet, and sanitation.
- Construct sports and recreational facilities including football fields, basketball courts, gymnasiums, tennis courts and multipurpose halls just like in the US and other advanced nations.
- The ambitious campaign will also replace dilapidated school buildings with durable, inspiring architecture that supports learning and pride in the school environment.
Building Specialized Schools for High-Achieving Students
To nurture the best and brightest in every region, the NBP will construct a network of specialized public middle schools, high schools and colleges for top-performing students.
These schools will offer specialized education programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), public leadership, design thinking, information technology and strategic development.
The main purpose of this approach is for these specialized schools to serve as incubators for future leaders in both public service and the private sector.
University-Level Expansion and Specialization
To catch up with other developing countries, The University of The Gambia will be expanded to include or promote departments that directly align with the NBP’s national development priorities. Some of the departments the country will need to heavily invest in will include, but not limited to, the following:
- School of Architecture and Engineering that offers globally competitive degree programs in modern architecture and urban planning.
- School of Agriculture and Natural Resources focused on food security, agro-innovation and sustainability.
- Medical Sciences Faculty with fully subsidized tuition to produce doctors, nurses and public health experts. The NBP will also build The University of the Gambia Teaching hospital to match some of the best hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa.
- All degree programs in engineering, agriculture, medicine, and architecture will be subsidized by the government through scholarships to ensure equitable access and strategic national investment in key sectors.
Technology and Innovation Hubs
In partnership with countries like Turkey, India and a select EU nations, the NBP will establish West Africa’s most advanced IT and innovation schools in The Gambia. These institutions will:
- Teach coding, robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital entrepreneurship.
- Serve as incubation hubs for tech start-ups and local innovation.
- Bridge the digital divide by offering community-based programs for youth and underserved communities.
Youth Media and Education Broadcasting
The NBP will also establish Youth Education TV Stations to broadcast educational programming, including academic tutorials, civic education, entrepreneurship and leadership development.
The programs will showcase student achievements and innovation stories from across the country.
Moreover, it would reinforce national values, literacy and awareness through interactive and entertaining educational media.
Construction of Public Workshops, Laboratories and Vocational Training Centers Across the Country
In an effort to promote hands-on learning and skilled labor development, modern science laboratories, engineering workshops, agricultural testing centers and innovation studios will be built across school districts.
In these well-funded facilities, students will be trained in practical skills to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and national workforce needs.
first 100 days:
- Begin an education audit to map school conditions nationwide.
- Draft funding legislation for teacher training programs.
- Pilot a vocational training hub in one region.
